A Review of Foundlings in Homeschooling Today by Steve Murphy |
If you or your child doesn't love the book, keep your copy, and we'll send you your money back. |
Modern Christians reading the Old Testament wrongly assume many things. In our minds' eyes, we view these saints of old as unenlightened but sanctified cavemen with only the slightest bit of personality and almost none of the stuff that makes up the real heroes of today. Foundlings takes a huge step away from this thinking. |
The unique strength of this book is its faithful, biblical contextualization, combined with powerfully fun creativity. The stout faith of men and women who, through great adventures, endure hardship for the sake of their God will inspire you and your children. Quite possibly the best contribution this book makes to our libraries is that it will raise the bar for those we call heroes. Combining the powerful fictional characters who have become somewhat iconic within our culture with real-life Christianity, you'll see men and women like you and me with challenges and believable victories that come only from faithful obedience and the grace of Almighty God. Harding wonderfully avoids the temptation to make the story a sugary sweet, happily ever after tale, while not giving in to the postmodern view that there is no true victory or resolution. The book is a great family read-aloud that you will not want to put down - our family didn't. In fact, my children continually reminded me to get back to the story so we could find out what happened to Lord McDougal, Fergus Leatherhead, and the foundlings. |

Have you been searching for great christian fiction for your older kids (or you)? Books that don't use magic to entice it's reader, or superhero's for your children to idol? Or uses the young earth world-view (that's right, NO evolution). Look no further...except to the author when you come to the end of the story & are at the edge of your seat for more :) I asked my daughter what she liked so much about this book and she said "because there's no blank space. I mean, there's not any space where nothing's happening. There's always something important happening". I have read it and can say the same thing. There is excitement with every sentence. You won't want to put the book down, and when you come to the end...you're going to want more! This book is an attention grabber, and keeper. As soon as my daughter was done reading the first, she asked if we could get the second. That took her only 2 days to complete and now she is anxiously awaiting the next in the series. Mr. Harding has certainly written books that have great potential to become classic pieces of literature. Most importantly, throughout the books, Mr. Harding uses scriptural references and his love for The Lord shines. It's refreshing to read such a wonderful book. |

This is an exciting Christian alternative to novels with wizards, witches, and magic. I am pleased to offer my boys a book that will satisfy their fascination with dragons as well as help them visualize the power of God. Reading God's Word throughout the novel is just another way to help them absorb it in their hearts. Perhaps an even grander use for the book is to offer it to kids who may not yet have a relationship with Jesus Christ. It certainly makes the time period come alive ... |

... can I just say I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for this book! Really, I'm at a loss for the appropriate words to give this book the honor that it's due. And here's why: True to his word, there is no magic, no evolution and no humanism in this book. But it's packed with truth, scripture, joy, laughter, sorrow, adventure, excitement, imagination and the WHOLE BOOK honors God! As a family we have rejected quite a few books that most believers would consider excecptable, including the Chronicles of Narnia…extreme I know. We have read the books, my older children have read them too, and while they do have truth interlaced throughout, we are not comfortable with the magic and witchcraft. So we haven't reread them and we don't own them. So I was thrilled to learn about this series and hopeful that it held up to its promises! Boy did it! I read the book during lunch time. The book is aimed at the older child-middle school and up, though my younger ones were at the table while I was reading it. There were some intense moments in the book but the wording of the "moments" made it so that my little ones didn't understand, over their heads, in my opinion. I love this book because it was safe, it was God-honoring and truthful. We were laughing out loud, I was crying ( I always get choked up during the emotional parts). Highly Recommended! |
Throw out the old way you thought about dragons and discover how this writer puts them into books with a Christian worldview. Foundlings is not fantasy though to the naked eye it would be easy to place it in that genre. However, you will not find magic in this work. The publisher also says it is devoid of not only magic but evolution, humanism or compromise. That alone gave me a thrill. As a Christian there are so many worldly things I say no to when asked permission by my children. However, this book gets not only approval but a standing ovation. Do not be mistaken and think this book will also be devoid of adventure, thrills, fun and challenging thoughts. Foundlings not only gives you a ride that combats any roller coaster it gives you a true sense of heroism and family discussions that center on the glory of God's creation and Word. Think your kid is not interested in the bible or Christian books? This book will change both your minds. This is an excellent read aloud for the whole family. If you choose not to read this book aloud as a family, I encourage you to read it first or at the same time as your child. This book provides discussion topics and insights you will want to explore with your child. Besides, it is a great book and fun read for even the parent! |

"Foundlings was my favorite fiction book ever--exotic time setting, creatures that seemed like fantasy but are based on historical facts, unique characters ranging from a fearful dwarf to creepy dragon priests, and most importantly the godly examples and scripture woven throughout the book. All in all I didn't think it could get any better--well, Mr. Harding proved me wrong! He took everything I liked about Foundlings to a whole new level! I've read Paladins three times and I like it better every time I read it." - Kaleb, 15 |
"5 out of 5 Stars. Great book for kids and their parents." - Christy, mother of 3 |
"We finished the book today, we absolutely loved it. I tried to drag it out but the kids were so anxious for me to finish. Next to the Narnia series your book has been the only other book that my kids have begged me to read. My daughter has drawn pictures of what she thinks some of the characters might look like. My boys remind me several times a day that this is one their favorite books. Thank you for such a powerful book that displayed God's love and His hope." -The Myers Family, Florida |
Like gnarled roots of an old tree, these stories twist and turn, entangling you in anticipation to see how they all unwind ... The story follows the heroic adventures of a handful of Godfearing men and children. These often funny and endearing characters show us what can be accomplished when you learn to overcome your fears and walk in faith ... The books read like fantasy novels, yet without magic spells, wands, and flying broomsticks. Instead, Scripture and prayer are revealed as the powerful tools needed to overcome the works of those who obey the evil one; to offer hope to our heroes in desperate times; and to give them boldness to share their faith along the way. God's redemptive power is also plainly evident when even a sworn enemy can turn to the one true God ... A thrilling cliffhanger ends each story so be sure to read them in order. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next one. Maybe these "magic-free" character-building, God-honoring novels will start a new trend ... I hope so!" |
"… it was something I wanted to keep reading even if we had been reading for four hours. I just didn't want the book to end." - Big Mac, age 13 "I completely and utterly love this book! … I loved everything about the book, especially Horatio. I can't wait for more!" - Courtney, 16 "At first, I was a bit hesitant because I am not a giant and dragon type of girl. However, I found myself anxious each night to indulge in the lives of these notorious characters. Such an uplifting reading experience involving courage and faith … A read a loud at its best." - Mom of six "Both of my sons, ages 15 and 16, greatly enjoyed the book. The real surprise is that I loved it too! This is not the type of story I would normally read for enjoyment." - Lorie, homeschool Mom |
